Private château in the Alps

Dating from 1244, the Château de la Mar is full of history. The estate was owned by the counts of Mareste. It was in 1432 that Humbert de Mareste, famous crusader, escorted the Princess of Cyprus, Anne de Lucignan, on the occasion of his marriage to the Duke of Savoy. He brought back some vines which he named in his honour “Highness”, and it was in homage to the count that the hill was called “Marestel”.

All 5 suites located in the heart of the castle have an authentic decoration, in a pure XVIII style and the intimacy of the castles of the past.

The Jongieux vineyard covers 250 ha, including 22 ha of Cru Marestel. Robert Parker describes this hillside as the steepest in the wine world. Its soils are made up of marl-limestone scree of the Kimmeridgian and benefit from a full-west exposure and a microclimate that confers to it the proximity of the Rhône, make that here the highness is sublime. The 7 ha of vines of the Château de la Mar are at the heart of the appellation and receive privileged sunshine creating exceptional wines. The vines are in fact partially grassed and led in reasoned agriculture. All the plots are harvested and sorted by hand, which preserves the quality of the grapes. The harvests are parcelled and slowly pressed in whole bunch. The cuvées raised in barrels are cut several times to put back the lees in suspension which will give body and amplitude.
