Birthplace of now international grapes

On the Saint Jacques de Compostelle path, pilgrims drinking very rarely water (because it was not drinkable most of the time and for religious reassons) the region saw growing plantings in the vineyard to cope up with consumption. Pilgrims could also spread the grapes during their trips taking and planting them in their own regions.
Attached to Bordeaux that saw the opening of wine transportation growing under Henri de Plantagenêt, wines were sent from the south-western ports to Bordeaux and then to England and the northern countries of Europe. That is how where given the names to the wines : by their port of expedition : Cahors, Gaillac or by the name of their sender.

Environment
South-western vineyards cover 13 departements and 3 regions from the border of the Garonne river and the Canal du Midi and crossing Gascogne, Basque Country and Pyrenees.
This diverse environment had for capital Toulouse, the "pink-town" and you will be able to see here stone houses (from the region), and to experience different climate being sometimes in altitude and sometimes benefiting from a double climate influence (between ocean and sea or between ocean and ountains).

Terroirs
Soils made out of argiles, chalk, sand, galets boulbènes depending on the area you are staying at. Or course with this diversity of terroirs, many styles of wines appear. If we add the climate influence (depending on if you are close to a river, the sea or mountains), we rise typicities. So wine makers had to adapt and that is why you will find many type of wines.

Production
As many red as white wines are produced here. Among the whites, a lot of famous sweet wines are produced like the AOC Jurançon. On the red wines side, we assist for the last 20 years to a revalorization of the local grapes thanks to their international popularity such as Malbec in the Cahors area that give full bodied wines made with love by their winemakers.
